چکیده [English]

Introduction:

In today's world, gender inequalities in access to urban and sports spaces have become one of the major challenges in achieving sustainable urban development. In many societies, especially in developing countries, women face various barriers in accessing sports facilities and spaces. These barriers not only negatively impact women's physical abilities but also affect their mental and emotional well-being. Numerous studies show that physical activities and sports are crucial for improving individuals' physical and mental health, but this opportunity is not available for women in many cities and communities due to social, cultural, and infrastructural limitations. Particularly in societies where specific norms for women are still considered, many women cannot freely and safely access public and sports spaces without fear of harassment or judgment. These challenges can prevent women from fully utilizing their right to participate in physical activities.

Given the importance of sports and physical activity in enhancing the health and well-being of the public, this research aims to provide solutions for urban design that would allow women to easily and confidently engage in physical activities. The goal of this research is to offer a model for designing a "healthy city and a city that supports women's physical activities," where urban planning interactions and sports management can work in harmony to remove existing barriers and increase women's participation in physical activities. This research strives to provide a comprehensive strategy for designing such cities that not only address the physical and psychological needs of women but also contribute to sustainable urban development.

In designing a healthy and activity-supportive city, factors such as access to sports spaces, ensuring safety, facilitating access to infrastructure, social and cultural support, and raising public awareness are key components. These factors should not only address women's needs regarding sports spaces but should also be designed in a way that allows women to access these spaces freely and without concern. On the other hand, considering the various social, economic, cultural, and historical dimensions in urban planning can help create a safe and suitable space for women. As a result, this research aims to introduce the various dimensions and key components in designing cities that are suitable for women's physical activities and promote their physical and mental health.

Research Method:

This research was conducted using a qualitative approach through the grounded theory method of Glaser for data analysis. The choice of qualitative methods, particularly grounded theory, was made because this approach enables researchers to analyze data in a structured manner based on the experiences and perspectives of participants. Through initial and secondary coding, this method helps extract patterns and core concepts from the data, allowing researchers to present new theories and strategies in urban and sports design for women. Semi-structured interviews were used for data collection. These interviews were purposefully conducted with 15 women, experts, and urban planners. Sampling in this research was theoretical and continued until theoretical saturation was reached. At this stage, no new concepts for coding were found, and the data were thoroughly analyzed. The data were initially identified using primary coding and then general concepts and patterns were extracted through secondary coding.

Findings:

The results of this research showed that a healthy city that supports physical activity for women must consider a set of social, cultural, economic, security, and infrastructural features. One of the most important factors affecting access to physical activity is the availability of sports and public spaces. In many urban areas, especially in low-income neighborhoods, sports spaces are so limited and inaccessible that women are deprived of participating in sports and social activities. Additionally, safety in public and sports spaces is another fundamental issue that affects women's presence. In general, many women, especially in urban communities, avoid public spaces due to security concerns.

Apart from security and accessibility, designing appropriate infrastructure that aligns with the needs of women is also crucial. These infrastructures must be designed in such a way that women can easily access and use sports spaces. For example, the creation of parks, cycling paths, and safe pedestrian walkways can allow women to use these spaces without worrying about external threats. Also, social and cultural support from the community, families, and governmental organizations can encourage women to participate in sports activities. These supports may include education and awareness-raising about the benefits of sports, changing social attitudes toward women’s sports, and creating a culture of active participation in the community.

Conclusion:

The creation and development of a "healthy city that supports physical activity for women" in the modern world requires a comprehensive and multi-dimensional approach that considers various aspects of urban planning and sports management. Based on the findings of this research, the implementation of such a model in urban communities will only be feasible through the design and development of appropriate public and sports spaces, ensuring safety in urban environments, and improving access to resources and services. Achieving this goal goes beyond just providing physical spaces for sports but also involves addressing the socio-cultural conditions that influence women’s participation in physical activities. Therefore, urban design and planning must prioritize creating environments that support women’s health, well-being, and active participation in community life.

Moreover, the successful realization of the "healthy city" model for women requires close collaboration among various stakeholders, including urban planners, local authorities, policymakers, and community leaders. This collective effort should aim to design spaces that cater to the unique needs of women, ensuring that these spaces are safe, accessible, and conducive to social interaction. By fostering a supportive ecosystem that integrates public policies with thoughtful urban design, cities can enhance women's quality of life and encourage greater participation in physical activities.

It is also important to highlight the crucial role of social and cultural support in driving this change. Governments, communities, and families must work together to promote awareness of the benefits of physical activity for women, challenge existing stereotypes, and shift societal attitudes toward female participation in sports. This collective cultural shift will empower women to engage more freely and confidently in physical activities without fear of judgment or societal constraints.

In addition to improving women’s health, the realization of this model can contribute to broader societal and environmental goals such as sustainable urban development, social inclusion, and gender equality. By designing cities that prioritize women’s physical activity and well-being, we can create more equitable environments that benefit all members of society. Through this process, we can not only improve women’s health and social standing but also foster stronger communities, economic resilience, and more sustainable development in the long run. This holistic approach to urban planning will have a lasting positive impact, ensuring that women can fully participate in society, contribute to their communities, and enjoy better overall quality of life.
